Ming the Terrible: Lysiosquillid Threat Posture
The picture was taken at Lembah Straits in Manado, Indonesia. According to the author, the mantis had just driven away a flounder. When the spearer turned around, it found itself confronting one of nature's most determined and potent predators --- the nature photographer!
This is without a doubt one of the better spearer pics around. The characteristic dorsal bands of Lysiosquilla can be clearly seen along the critter's back. In front and below, the third to fifth legs form a downy-looking golden mass from which protrude spine-like claws used to grip its prey.
