A Rare and Wonderful Discovery: The Hunt for Philodendron petraeum
Sometimes there are rare and wonderful discoveries to be found even in the most unlikely of places. On June 28, 2005 I visited the New York Botanical Garden to take pictures of any and all aroids that featured this life habit. Out of the dozens of pictures of aroids that I took, one of the most interesting was an arborescent specimen with large beautifully glossy triangular leaves. Unfortunately, the specimen was labeled as being an unknown Philodendron.

On the Origins of Philodendron x evansii
The huge beautiful ruffled leaves of Philodendron x evansii has always attracted the attention of aroid lovers and laymen alike. Indeed, the path to my obsession with the meconostigma aroids was paved by my visit to Huntington Gardens in California in 2005, when we chanced upon several grand specimens of this aroid, one in full bloom.

How I Became a Meconostigma Nut
I think obsessions sneak up on you. They don't just appear, fully-formed, and change your life forever. They appear first as innocuous events in your life, perhaps even trivial incidents that seem less than ephemeral, then blossom slowly like an enormous flower.
