The Simple Tao
The Way is to benefit others and not to injure.
The Way is to act but not to compete.
It does not show greatness and is therefore truly great.
Be warned! This is not a safe path, in the sense that your doubts and fears will be smothered by the pacifying drug of a promised afterlife or reincarnation, nor is it a panacea for the evil mind and rotten heart. It is the surest path to becoming truly content and yet still be striving for more at the same time. By taking this path, you may find that the universe is not something controlled by an unseen and sometimes malevolent force, but is instead a panoramic canvas upon which a vast, majestic, and beautiful multitude of interdependent and inter-related components interact, which can neither be thoroughly understood nor completely measured.
Here in The Way lies the preface to God.
It is up to us to tell the story, each in our own small way.
- Tao
"the way", "the path". it is often represented by water because water always seeks the path of least resistance, yet is strong enough to demolish even stone when no other recourse is available. everything below flows from this.
Here are the 10 guides to the True Path. To live them is to follow the Simple Tao.
- Make your goal effortless action
avoid unnecessary action or action that is not spontaneous.
- Treasure simplicity
eliminate whatever is unnecessary and artificial and appreciate the simple and the apparently ordinary.
- Cultivate stillness
only stillness will clear muddy waters and enable you to see the truth.
- Be patient
Can you remain unmoving until the right action arises by itself?
- Be gentle
love peace and restraint and avoid all unnecessary violence. "do not regard weapons as lovely things. for to think them lovely means to delight in them, and to delight in them means to delight in the slaughter of men."
- See beauty
appreciate the beauty around you and in yourself.
- Be true
dedicate your life only to that which you find beautiful or fascinating, and thus be true to yourself.
- Love3
the perfect love has no climax. its beginning is the same as its end and all points in between.
- Be happy
to conduct one's life according to the Tao,
is to conduct one's life without regrets.
- Be compassionate and honor life
only those who are compassionate and treasure life in all its forms can show true bravery and acquire true wisdom.
